Images of Maui

Just yesterday, we returned home from a long, romantic weekend in Maui…a magical island full of rainbows, waterfalls and moonscapes.
But here’s the thing: We tend to have bad luck with cameras in Hawaii.
On our 2006 trip to Oahu and the Big Island, we took some truly special photos of the islands themselves, as well as Adam’s sisters in Honolulu (where they live) and our friends’ wedding in Kona. Too bad our camera was stolen on the way back to L.A. Aargh.
This time around, as we prepared for Maui, our treasured Canon Power Shot hit the wall. Adam turned it on a few days before we left, only to get a “lens error” message. We took it to a local repair shop and were told it’ll take 2-4 weeks to fix whatever the heck’s wrong.
Fortunately, Adam’s company has a Canon EOS 50D on hand, so he packed it up and brought it home. Friday morning at dawn, we parked near LAX, unloaded our suitcases, hopped a shuttle, got in line for security and made it as far as the x-ray before Adam suddenly stared at me, open-mouthed…realizing that he’d left the camera in the car.
So, um, hooray for love, patience…and the built-in cameras in our iPhones. Oh, and Maui.

Hawaii's license plate has a rainbow, and with good reason; on Maui, they happen several times a day

The clouds over Haleakala Volcano create a lot of rain, good for growing sugarcane all over the island

Nearby, in largely rural Upcountry, the Surfing Goats Dairy is one of only two goat dairies in the Hawaiian Islands; its wares can be found in restaurants and foods all over Maui

Beneath Hana lies a lava tube over a mile long, containing creatures not found anywhere else on Earth
Here are more of our photos from this trip to Maui…and from our 1999 honeymoon, too.

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

Sweet photos — especially considering they’re from your iphone!
Looks like you had a great time.
OMG. I would *die* if I forgot my camera.
However, gorgeous pictures and an overall great weekend!
I love Maui but haven’t been there since 1984. There’s something about the light in that photo of the cows in the field that really captures it for me. I, too,am impressed with the iPhone shots!
Oh, Melanie – if this isn’t a testimony for the built-in camera in the iPhone, I don’t know what is. Your shots are beautiful!
You packed so much in your short time there … nicely done.
Kara
BTW, did Adam get the silent treatment for a while? A pout? A few choice words? I would have FLIPPED OUT if Q forgot ours. But I am not the most patient & understanding person in the world. Whereas Q was raised on, “Oh, well. That’s life.”
I am *trying* so hard to teach my kids to think more along the lines of the latter than the former (cuz expecting perfectionism and no mistakes – specially when it comes to kiddos – is not always a good thing).
Hoping to get to Maui next year and came upon your fabulous photos. Now I’m even more determined. Thanks so much for these!
Ladies, thank you! Truly, the iPhone hooked me up where my husband failed me.
K, I clouded over like a silent storm for about 15 minutes. Not. Thrilled. But Adam, who (like Quent) is one of the most easygoing men on Earth, said we could always buy a disposable camera…and/or I could flog him publicly right there in the airport.
Seemed a good pair of choices. When my visions of violence passed, I reminded myself that 1) this was his birthday trip, and 2) traveling always comes with a little drama. It was oddly comforting to get it out of the way before we’d even left the ground!
You can’t even tell these photos are from your iPhone! Gorgeous!
Gorgeous photos, even from the iPhone (is there anything it can’t do?) You took me back to our trip to Maui and the ascent to the Haleakala crater. The views were stunning!
PS I had the same Lens Error with my Canon IXUS and it took them a month to fix it. Camera works fine now.
I love your pics! They bring back memories!
I’d almost forgotten about those microscopic creatures “not found anywhere else on earth” until you mentioned them here! Did you get to see them? We were lucky to go in the Hana Lava Tube back when Chuck Thorne still gave guided tours… he brought along these mini-microscopes that we used to see those little creatures – it was very cool… kind of creepy to think those little guys were in there, but cool!
I still can’t get over the quality of these pictures taken using a phone camera! Now, which little creatures were those in the lava tubes?
Before entering the Hana Lava Tube, we were told that there are tiny little centipedes and beetles, as well as inch-long cockroaches…all of which are a sheer white. One the one hand, hooray, you have a better chance of seeing them in the dark, but that’s the exact same reason the whole idea just creeps me out. We were only “lucky” enough to see a bright green, 20-inch worm with a semicircular hammerhead; this little beauty can hang from cave ceilings by its sticky tail.
Selling you all on the lava tube, huh?
