Giveaway: Discovery Channel’s “North America” Series on DVD or Blu-Ray

north-america-series-discovery-channel

On October 1st, Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment is releasing the two-disc set of Discovery Channel’s exciting natural history series, North America…

…and I’m giving it away (on Blu-ray or DVD) to one lucky winner!

In this fascinating and entertaining series narrated by Tom “Magnum P.I.” Selleck, intrepid bands of cameramen — armed with some truly impressive technology — spent five years capturing the challenges and dangers faced by mammals, birds, fish, insects and landscapes from the Yukon to the jungles of Panama.

In the seven-hour-long finished product, all sorts of North American creatures become engaging, emotional characters, and spectacular shows of weather are punctuated by rock songs like Lenny Kravitz’s “I Love the Rain,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.”

By the time I’d watched all seven hours, I felt like I’d scaled whole mountain ranges, schlepped across arid deserts, explored deep forests, and crashed onto rugged coasts. I’d seen trees, plants and flowers bloom and die, I swam with crocodiles and salmon, splashed through a river with brown bears, and prowled a lonely beach at night with a jaguar.

But for me, the most stunning part was an aerial shot of the seemingly endless migration of spinner and hammerhead sharks that takes place every year, just off the coast of Miami. And by “just off,” I mean way the heck less than a half-mile. The juxtaposition of people frolicking on the beach without seeming to realize there were millions of sharks swimming just offshore? Amazing.

Basically, this whole series serves as astonishing inspiration to travel in North America.

Note: In case you plan to share it with the children in your life, know that you’ll see all sorts of creatures courting and mating, and a lot of hungry animals chasing down frightened adults and babies from other species.

Sometimes, the prey gets away — but sometimes, they don’t.

  1. The large number of humpback whales breaching so closely to the kayakers/photographers was something that I never could have imagined, let alone seen. Absolutely amazing, frightening and beautiful at the same time. It was as if the whales knew it was time for their close-up.

  2. I like you on FB(Kelly D Saver) and I like the wildlife of North America, like foxes and owls.

I don’t know how I can really just name one feature of the beauty of North America as my favorite. I love the rolling hills in Ohio, and how the seasons change and photosynthesis occurs and I swear, I really do, that I can taste it in the air.

Or the beaches around Hilton Head island and their special sort of magical gentle tides.

Or the mountains in Southern California, the lakes in Austin, the big turtles on Amelia Island… I could go on all day.

What I love about North America is the different terrains that you can pass through and see. You get a little bit of everything to enjoy: mountains, lakes, valleys, waterfalls. You can experience it all here! And with the different places you get to see different animals and how they interact and adapt in their habitats. It is truly amazing how everything learns to work together and feed off each other.
