On October 1st, Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment is releasing the two-disc set of Discovery Channel’s exciting natural history series, North America…
…and I’m giving it away (on Blu-ray or DVD) to one lucky winner!
In this fascinating and entertaining series narrated by Tom “Magnum P.I.” Selleck, intrepid bands of cameramen — armed with some truly impressive technology — spent five years capturing the challenges and dangers faced by mammals, birds, fish, insects and landscapes from the Yukon to the jungles of Panama.
In the seven-hour-long finished product, all sorts of North American creatures become engaging, emotional characters, and spectacular shows of weather are punctuated by rock songs like Lenny Kravitz’s “I Love the Rain,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.”
By the time I’d watched all seven hours, I felt like I’d scaled whole mountain ranges, schlepped across arid deserts, explored deep forests, and crashed onto rugged coasts. I’d seen trees, plants and flowers bloom and die, I swam with crocodiles and salmon, splashed through a river with brown bears, and prowled a lonely beach at night with a jaguar.
But for me, the most stunning part was an aerial shot of the seemingly endless migration of spinner and hammerhead sharks that takes place every year, just off the coast of Miami. And by “just off,” I mean way the heck less than a half-mile. The juxtaposition of people frolicking on the beach without seeming to realize there were millions of sharks swimming just offshore? Amazing.
Basically, this whole series serves as astonishing inspiration to travel in North America.
Note: In case you plan to share it with the children in your life, know that you’ll see all sorts of creatures courting and mating, and a lot of hungry animals chasing down frightened adults and babies from other species.
Sometimes, the prey gets away — but sometimes, they don’t.
As of October 1st, the two-disc set of North America, including filmmakers’ commentary and a 32-page companion photo booklet, will be available in two formats: Blu-Ray ($29.93 US) and DVD ($34.99 US).
But thanks to Gaiam Vivendi,
