When our friends Ann and Ed announced they were going to Isla Holbox (Hole-bosh, Yucatec Mayan for “black hole”), my first question was: “Where the heck is that?”

At least for now, they were happy to report, this is a little slice of Caribbean paradise on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula that few tourists have ever heard of. Huge and gentle whale sharks, on the other hand, love the place.
