Isla Holbox: A Windfall of Whale Sharks

When our friends Ann and Ed announced they were going to Isla Holbox (Hole-bosh, Yucatec Mayan for “black hole”), my first question was: “Where the heck is that?”

At least for now, they were happy to report, this is a little slice of Caribbean paradise on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula that few tourists have ever heard of. Huge and gentle whale sharks, on the other hand, love the place.

Doin’ Time at the Ruins of Tulum

During my recent (and first) big-ship cruise aboard the Crown Princess, my pal Samantha and I took every opportunity to disembark and go on a shore excursion to see how Princess arranges for its passengers to experience the ship’s ports of call.

Our third shore excursion was to the Mayan ruins at Tulum, on Mexico’s east coast Yucatán Peninsula.

I just spent a week aboard the Crown Princess on my first big-ship cruise, sailing from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida through the Western Caribbean. I brought along my dear friend Samantha (also a cruise newbie), and while the sailing was billed as the Romance Summit, for us it was our first-ever Valentine’s Day away from our husbands. Now that the ground has (almost) stopped moving when I stand still, I feel ready to reflect on our week at sea.
