The thick palm jungles and white-sand beaches of the Samaná offer a chance to see, hear and feel Dominican culture in action, to tackle some backcountry eco-adventures, and to sip Mama Juanas by an Atlantic sunset…but the two of you might not be alone for long.

A sexy new road from Santo Domingo, an established community of Western European expats and more recently, an influx of Russian tourists and hotel developers, means that sooner than later is the best time to find your own corner of the Samaná.

Where the Atlantic and Caribbean blend, the Dominican Republic shares the big, wild island of Hispaniola with Haiti. It has the Caribbean region’s second largest economy (from mineral mining and agricultural products like coffee, cocoa, tobacco and coconuts) and population (about 10 million); Dominicans, who range from some of the poorest in the region to gobsmackingly wealthy, are an often uneasy yet fascinating mix of European, Latino and West African descent.

While many foreign travelers never explore beyond the eastern beaches of Punta Cana, I was more excited to to visit the northeastern Samaná Peninsula, a mix of untouched jungle and waterfalls; small, quiet beach communities along gentle stretches of coastline; all-inclusive resorts and small independent hotels; soaring mountains; and cool splashes through milky teal rivers.
