In Tanzania’s Ngrorongoro Crater, we saw some things that to us were absolutely incredible…
…but to the Crater itself, were just part of the neighborhood.
In order to visit the legendary national park at Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, you’re required by law to be accompanied by an official safari guide.
This is a brilliant idea — for three reasons:
1) While someone else does the driving, you can both concentrate on the incredible scenery.
2) An expert guide can put all the amazing things you’ll see into a historical, geological and zoological context.
3) Someone will have your back if a lion strolls into the public bathroom…while you’re using it.
Where’s the best placed you’ve ever stayed?
Here, I’ll give you a minute to think…and then I’ll top it.
The best place we’ve ever stayed is northwest Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, an African fantasy with a flourish of chandeliers and zebras to mow the lawn. Since I left it seven months ago, I’ve thought about it every single day.
So, you know how some places in the world just seem theoretical — even imaginary — until you actually go there?
Well, that’s how I felt about Africa for much of my life. Until now.
Having now seen a few corners of the continent for ourselves — largely in Botswana and Tanzania — we’re happy to report that while Africa is truly vast, it’s far from unknowable.
In fact, we’ve fallen so much in love that I dare say we’ve left a bit of our hearts behind.
Hope to go get ‘em back someday.
