Giveaway: National Geographic’s NOVICA

This giveaway is now closed. Thank you to all who entered!

NOVICA, a shopping site affiliated with National Geographic, allows global artisans to express their talent and charge a fair price for quality work that reflects their individual cultures.

And now they’re allowing me to give away a gift certificate code worth $75 to one lucky winner

When I travel to other countries, I love to meet artisans and artists and see them create their work. Handicrafts and artwork often provide a gateway into the cultural context of a place, illuminating a destination’s landscapes and raw materials, as well as a people’s folklore and definitions of beauty.

However, I admit that I often get frustrated while souvenir shopping overseas, searching for things that spark my interest, fit my budget and symbolize that place. And if I do manage to find something I like, I often second-guess myself about it, worrying over quality and debating luggage space vs. shipping costs.

More often than not, I come home with nothing. This won’t bother me much until I see a fellow traveler’s gorgeous embroidered handbag, hand-carved ceremonial mask or intricate piece of jewelry; at first I’ll be fascinated, then jealous, then regretful that I didn’t buy something special on my last trip.

Enter NOVICA, a site that’s ideal for reluctant travel-shoppers…like me.

Quality of the items for sale on NOVICA is determined by buying scouts who visit each artisan and evaluate their work. Artisans approved by the site are free to set their own prices, and no sweat shop or child labor is allowed. The site’s goal is to enable these artisans to make a living creating their culturally-specific work; customers who like the work of particular artisans can even give them extra support via micro-lending.

NOVICA features 30,000+ items handmade by artisans from Asia, Africa, India, Central America and South America: men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and jewelry, as well as tableware, home decor and artwork.

In case the idea of choosing from 30,000 items overwhelms you, here are some that have caught my eye:

All of the above items cost $40 US or less, which might give you an idea of the reasonably-priced goodness that awaits. Items arrive with small thank you notes from their artisans that include an explanation of the cultural significance of the item and /or instructions about handling and care.

The Novica gift certificate code I’ve been authorized to give away is for $75 US, including tax and shipping, which means you can buy a couple of nice things, one special item, or save on a unique splurge.
