Museums LA: Visit Los Angeles Museums for Free

Chris Burden’s “Urban Light,” an installation of salvaged street lamps at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

I’ve lived in L.A. since ’93, and feel very proud of my city’s cultural offerings.

(And no, I don’t mean the Kardashians. But you’re very funny.)

I love our wide array of museums, featuring everything from art to rare books, history and random ephemera.

And huzzah:

Now through November 11, when you book two or more “Museums LA” nights at participating Los Angeles hotels, you receive two free admissions to 30 of L.A.’s most prestigious museums!

I don’t often feature such time-sensitive travel deals here, but this one is straight up my alley.

I’m consistently miffed by the packaging of my huge, fascinating city as little more than a Star Maps/theme park/Disneyland pit stop, or a plastic-surgery-studded bike path beside the Pacific Ocean. Los Angeles is home to people from all over the Earth who’ve come here to create works of art, design, literature, entertainment and cuisine.

In short: L.A.’s got it going on, and its range of museums reflect the interests and backgrounds of the gajillions of folks who live here. I’d tell any visitor to L.A. to go soak up some sunshine — and then head indoors to meet the city.

  1. I just wanted to add that I had no idea how incredibly kid friendly LACMA is until I took my 2 1/2 year old twins there over the summer. They LOVE that museum. There are just enough exhibits for them to be fascinated by, a place to “create art” and then have a little lunch. What a glorious afternoon! Be sure to check out “Metropolis,” “The Rock,” and what my kids like to call “The Macaroni Exhibit,” which is about 1000 long noodley tubes that hang from about 30 feet high. Kids run through that with shrieks of sheer delight. Again, an afternoon of glory!

  2. In a couple months, I’ll be heading to LA for the first time in my life. I’ve heard good things from friends and family so I’m really looking forward to it!

  3. I have to admit that I did not know about the hotel promotion you mention above.
Our site also has just updated our free museum days list for Feb 2013.

I hope it could be of service to your readership :-)

  4. Jody, thank you! I imagine it will be, and I’m pleased to make your e-acquaintance. :)
