Granville Island Public Market: Food Porn in Vancouver

Granville Island Public Market: Food Porn in VancouverHeading to Vancouver? Love to eat, drink and be merry?

Well, tour the Granville Island Public Market and its ecologically-correct orgy of locally-sourced foodstuffs. You’ll find nature’s perfect doughnut — and meet a hell of a nice city along the way.

During my first visit to Vancouver just this summer, I took a half-hour’s breezy stroll from my swanky downtown hotel to Granville Island to take a tour of the city’s biggest food market. The walk across the Granville Street Bridge was exhilarating, but the all-but-open edge — hovering 89 feet above False Creek — would have been a tad less disconcerting if I wasn’t going it alone.

To get from the bridge to the market, follow clearly-marked signs that will take you down a flight of stairs from the bridge median; along a sloping, park-y path; along commercially-revived Johnston Street (which includes the famous Emily Carr University of Art + Design); and as you can see on this map, straight into the heart of the Island.

NOTE: For those of you who don’t want to hoof it here, hop on the False Creek Ferry behind the Vancouver Aquatic Centre; take the rainbow-logo Aquabus from a variety of stops around town; or, when/if it someday re-opens for service, the streetcar known as the Vancouver Downtown Historic Railway.

Once you find the market, head on back to the northeast corner to Edible British Columbia‘s booth. They employ local chefs to take groups of 2 to 8 people to a healthy swath of the 50 culinary vendors here, giving a little history of this formerly-languishing industrial port along the way. Everything you’ll find here, from chocolate to produce to coffee to every-bit-as-good-as-French pastries, are made with ingredients sourced just outside Vancouver or well within the BC province.

Gotta say, this is a magical way to spend two hours. You get to try some coffee, sniff some tea, try a petit four or three, and taste a little of everything from freshly-made soup to Canadian cheese, sausage and seafood. Questions about wine from the Okanagan or Cowichan Valleys? Not a problem. Curious about that little orange fruit over there? All over it. Want to know where the best place in town is for Pakistani/Vietnamese/dim sum and more? You have only to ask your guide, and/or any food purveyor in the place. These are folks with passionate opinions about food, and no gastronomic stone shall go unturned.

Yes, you can book a private tour for just the two of you. Yes, you should definitely come for a morning tour and stay on afterward for lunch. Hop around to whatever catches your fancy, then assemble a picnic to eat just outside by the water or all the way over in the 1,000-acre glory of Stanley Park

Just try not to weep as your consume your stunning spoils…as some things taste better without your salty tears of joy.
