Olduvai Gorge: Way the Hell Back in Time

The sands blow slowly forth, around and back again as though pushed by tides, always holding their shape, never explaining themselves.

The air around them crackles with a strange energy, the vista is seemingly endless, and while there’s nothing else really here per se, there’s a strange pull that wants you (and the sands themselves) to stay.

Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania's Great Rift Valley

While staying at the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, we took a short jaunt across Tanzania’s northwestern desert to visit the ancient Olduvai Gorge — aka human history’s Ground Zero. What we found there in the glorious middle of absolutely nowhere was surprising, sad…and inadvertently hilarious.

Off to Taiwan

Taiwan The Heart of Asia heart icon Off to TaiwanCan you say, “dream trip,” boys and girls? Well, I’m leaving tonight to take one of mine.

Ever since I had a brief layover in Taipei (well, technically in the neighboring city of Taoyuan, which is a lot closer to the airport), I’ve been curious about Taiwan, an island country off the southeastern coast of China. It’s full of ornate temples and mountain gorges, hot springs and tea fields, the 2,000-year history of the Hakka tribe and some of the best food to be found in Asia — or possibly anywhere on the planet.

Earlier this year, I was impressed by Taiwan’s vibrant presence at the Los Angeles Times Travel & Adventure Show, which further stoked my desire to see the country; the subsequent post I wrote about the show was read by some folks at the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, and well…here I go to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Taiwanese republic.

Never doubt the power of declaring your intentions, and of the internet.

While it’s easy to think of relaxing in the same breath as beaches and resorts, I personally love finding urban settings brimming with great culture and food that still make me feel I’ve left my own version of the real world behind. In other words, I love New Orleans.

And to be perfectly frank, it’s almost impossible to not slow down in New Orleans. Not unless you want to give yourself a heart attack, that is.

Seasquatch and the Strait of Georgia: Out on the Water in Vancouver

Seasquatch and the Strait of Georgia: Out on the Water in Vancouver

On Zodiac sea safari with Sewell's Marina, Vancouver, B.C.

Vancouver, British Columbia is largely known for the 1,000-acre Stanley Park, a veritable forest of high-rise buildings and a metric ton of Asian restaurants, but it’s the city’s surrounding waterways that held the most intrigue for me.

I recently visited Vancouver for the first time and was excited to get out on neighboring Howe Sound in a Zodiac boat and see the city from a different angle. And even when said boat was standing almost on its side — curiously enough — it still seemed like a good idea.
