Today is Adam’s 40th birthday, so there’s no better time to celebrate my husband, my best friend…
…my Plus One in the Two that are we.
Adam has the eyes and hands of an artist, the querying mind of a scientist, the social skills of a politician, the thumbs of a gardener, and the heart of a lion.
The more ridiculous a joke is, the harder he’ll laugh. But only Alec Baldwin can make him laugh until he cries.
If he’s near something that plays music, it’s on and he’s listening. He knows the words to at least 1000 songs, and is always happy to sing along with me, anywhere in the world.
He speaks fluent Spanish. He loves the comic series The Adventures of Tintin just as much now as when he was six years old. He cooks a gorgeous frittata. He loves a Mac store the way some men love a football stadium.
His favorite movies are Ace in the Hole and Brazil, which speak volumes about his tendency toward healthy skepticism and his passion for art direction.
When he was a child living outside of Bombay, India, local women used to offer his mother poultices to heal his eerie skin malady: freckles. Today, he wears SPF every day but proudly sports more freckles that I could count in a lifetime.
He works harder than almost anyone I know, and has helped build a movie poster design business that thrives. He rarely gets time to himself, but when he does, he always asks for me to be by his side. He also asks for coffee.
I believe his perfect weekend would involve:
- A full body massage
- Time to go through a whole stack of magazines (Wired, The Economist) and a week’s worth of Engadget posts
- A movie marathon at a big-screen theater
- The spontaneous rebirth of the Virgin Megastore
- A hike in the woods
- Splashing through a mountain stream
- An afternoon whiled away on a quiet and powdery beach
- Swimming beneath a jungle waterfall
- A seat on the couch in front of his Playstation, in full surround sound
- A chance to take his Porsche up to 140 mph on a deserted stretch of highway
- A game of soccer with our dog
- Anything with cheese, but aged Parmesan if you’ve got it
- Candy-colored cocktails shared with friends
- And some dark chocolate shared with me
Some of that happened this past weekend…and more of it will happen next week at a wellness retreat in Baja, Mexico called Rancho La Puerta.
Glad to say that after 17 years of knowing each other, and despite our busy work lives…he’s always up for the adventure.
Happy 40th birthday, my love!

I just couldn’t pass this up!
I’ve been busy lately, but have promoted your site for votes on the LP Travel Blog Awards on Twitter (- and I didn’t you know you’re on there til now!)
I’m one more Twitter stalker, needless to say. But back to Adam (yeah, he’s hot!) HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a great guy!
I’m blushing. And feeling very loved right now. As usual, frankly.
And yes, I love you too, Sunshine. You rock my world. And that’s coming from someone with the social skills of a politician!
Happy birthday, Adam. After meeting your lovely wife and reading this heartfelt, I can’t wait to meet you, too. What a dynamic duo you two are!
“He loves a Mac store the way some men love a football stadium.” Ah, a kindred spirit! Happy Birthday!
I got weepy reading this “Ode to Adam.”
Adore you both!
awwww… so sweet! What a wonderful post!
Happy birthday! Hope you have many happy years of travelling ahead!
Happy B-Day Adam!
