Happy 2nd Blogiversary, Travels With Two!

Adam and I celebrating his birthday in Maui, April 2010 (photo taken by a drunk Canadian stewardess)

As of today, I’ve been writing Travels With Two for two years…which is pretty amazing, considering this was supposed to be my bridge project between getting rejected from a lot of art galleries and trying to find something new to create.

It now appears that I’ve created a travel resource with hundreds of posts, a path to a new career and a worldwide community of workaholics/travel enthusiasts.

Oh, and a funny little crick in my neck from hunching over my laptop for hours on end.  But whatever.

Allow me to begin with a rant that’s been building for the last 24 months:

As much as I love my blog, I’m not a big fan of its name.

I’m painfully aware that “travels with two” implies two people traveling with a third.  Back in 2008, I’d wanted the far more sensible “travels for two,” but someone’s been sitting on a few versions of the domain for quite a while now.  Lame.  (Just e-mailed the woman, who’s based in Alabama, to see if I can’t convince her to give up the goods.)

Also back in 2008, I allowed my extremely gifted art director/graphic designer husband, Adam, to talk me into using a capital W for “With.” His logic:  TWT looks better as a logo than TwT.   And while I intrinsically know that capitalizing a preposition is grammatically incorrect, and sometimes it really bugs me, I still agree with him: TWT does look better.

And so here I sit, a former spelling bee competitor with a dream to inspire couples to travel, asking that you take me as I am…and read my blog.

Please feel free, as always, to leave your comments here. Like a post?  Not so much? Disagree with me?  Have something to add about a place you’ve been?  I’d love for you to leave comments!  Seriously, not only does this boost my Google ranking, it validates my very internet existence.  (I’ll never give your email address to anyone.)

There will be more TWT Travel Binders to come soon, on countries both far and wide. Planning a trip and need some resources?  Leave a comment and tell me where; if I don’t have a binder post up already, I’ll have one for you soon!

I’ll be covering even more couples’ trips, all around the world. Want me to turn your favorite vacation into a post or series?  Email me and let’s get the ball rolling: melanie@travelswithtwo.com

Looking for deals and contests and a little more travel discussion? Join Travels With Two on Facebook and @travelswithtwo on Twitter and your wish is my command.

In the meantime, I promise to continue taking you places.

Between now and October, I’m (often with Adam) off to:

Until yesterday, we’d been busy making plans for a two-week trip to Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro, but a sense of passion was missing.  Then I allowed myself to imagine Africa instead, and at that moment I knew…the way you know about a good melon.  We’re now looking at sustainably run, eco-minded tours in Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and/or Botswana that will allow us to go on land and river safaris, see Victoria Falls, visit animal rescue reserves and/or lend our labor to something useful for others.

I may yet pick up some clay, paint and tools and devise some new art in my studio.  But this blog is my ongoing creation, and it’s a pleasure to share my love of travel with you.

Thank you for continuing to share your own love with me — and each other.

Melanie (& Adam, too)

  1. YAYAYAYAY for Africa. I love that you were able to switch gears and follow your passion/instincts to create what I bet will be a phenomenal trip. (PS are you traveling to the DR w/ our BVK friends?)

See you in a few weeks in NYC, happy blogiversary, and I’ll read you no matter what your blog’s URL is.

  2. Thank you, my dear friend/PRSA rock star! Definitely going to the DR w/ BVK, and LOVING the Africa planning so far. Hope you’re having a great time on your Mystery Road Trip, and I’ll see you soon at TBEX!

(I love that this entire comment looks like we’re speaking in code.)

  3. Congratulations on two years…and for being such a resource. Here’s to many more happy traveling years!! Cheers!

  4. Shawn Poiley says:

Reading your blog is a fun vacation from my day. Congrats on two years, keep it up!

  5. Unbelievable! Two years already. Thanks for letting me take small respites from my so-not-traveling-anywhere-cool-with-young-kids life and enjoying yours.\

    Well done!

  6. Thanks, folks! I’ll happily keep prying you away from your work to bring you some pieces of the world outside. 🙂

  7. rock on with two phenomenal years… and here’s to the next two, whether that’s two or Two 😉 so many exciting adventures ahead. even if i did like the croatia itinerary more, since switzerland is a bit more accessible from there than say… botswana. oh well, next time. olivier and i backpacked around zambia, botswana and madagascar a few years ago. it certainly is an extraordinary adventure. enjoy the plans for sure. and happy blog birthday wishes from here !! love that photo of you and adam above, could you BE any cuter ? 🙂

  8. Thanks, Miz K! I’ll be missing Europe, for sure, but just heard some good news today — TBEX will be on the Continent next year! Just TRY and keep us away…

I’d love to hear more about your Africa trip, preferably by phone and with each of us stocked up with some macarons.:)

  9. Happy 2 year blogaversary TWT and Congratulations to you Melanie on your wonderful achievement! Your blog is an inspiration to many people and I wish more success and happy travels your way 🙂

I hope the TWT duo is celebrating big for this occasion!

  10. Happy Blogiversary! Sounds like you have a lot of great travels planned. Looking forward to hearing all about them.

  11. Congratulations! And happy trails! I do have to point out that there’s nothing grammatically incorrect about capitalizing a preposition. It’s more a style issue than a grammar issue and even there you’re okay capitalizing “with” as AP style is to “capitalize the principal words, including prepositions and conjunctions of four or more letters.” Feel better now?

  12. @Gourmantic, you are very. very good to me! Thank you for being such a faithful reader, and for providing such a wonderful travel blog of your own.

@Angie, thank you — I’ll have more Greece for you in the week to come!

@Ann, since you are the maven of all things editorial, I’ll take your word as gold. I will now allow myself to take a deep breath…and let it go.

Thank you for putting me at ease and for traveling “With” me, both in cyberspace and in real life. 🙂

  13. Happy 2 years to you!

Will be excited to hear about your upcoming travels. What an exciting slate!
