As of today, I’ve been writing Travels With Two for two years…which is pretty amazing, considering this was supposed to be my bridge project between getting rejected from a lot of art galleries and trying to find something new to create.
It now appears that I’ve created a travel resource with hundreds of posts, a path to a new career and a worldwide community of workaholics/travel enthusiasts.
Oh, and a funny little crick in my neck from hunching over my laptop for hours on end. But whatever.
Allow me to begin with a rant that’s been building for the last 24 months:
As much as I love my blog, I’m not a big fan of its name.
I’m painfully aware that “travels with two” implies two people traveling with a third. Back in 2008, I’d wanted the far more sensible “travels for two,” but someone’s been sitting on a few versions of the domain for quite a while now. Lame. (Just e-mailed the woman, who’s based in Alabama, to see if I can’t convince her to give up the goods.)
Also back in 2008, I allowed my extremely gifted art director/graphic designer husband, Adam, to talk me into using a capital W for “With.” His logic: TWT looks better as a logo than TwT. And while I intrinsically know that capitalizing a preposition is grammatically incorrect, and sometimes it really bugs me, I still agree with him: TWT does look better.
And so here I sit, a former spelling bee competitor with a dream to inspire couples to travel, asking that you take me as I am…and read my blog.
Please feel free, as always, to leave your comments here. Like a post? Not so much? Disagree with me? Have something to add about a place you’ve been? I’d love for you to leave comments! Seriously, not only does this boost my Google ranking, it validates my very internet existence. (I’ll never give your email address to anyone.)
There will be more TWT Travel Binders to come soon, on countries both far and wide. Planning a trip and need some resources? Leave a comment and tell me where; if I don’t have a binder post up already, I’ll have one for you soon!
I’ll be covering even more couples’ trips, all around the world. Want me to turn your favorite vacation into a post or series? Email me and let’s get the ball rolling: firstname.lastname@example.org
In the meantime, I promise to continue taking you places.
Between now and October, I’m (often with Adam) off to:
- the west coast of Costa Rica
- TBEX ’10 in New York City, a conference of 250+ travel writers and PR professionals
- the north coast and Samaná Peninsula of the Dominican Republic
- Washington, D.C., a city I haven’t lived in for 17 years, but where we now love being tourists
- the lovely Oaks of Ojai, 1 ½ hours north of L.A.
- wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma
- and Southern Africa, where Adam and I will celebrate my 40th birthday!
Until yesterday, we’d been busy making plans for a two-week trip to Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro, but a sense of passion was missing. Then I allowed myself to imagine Africa instead, and at that moment I knew…the way you know about a good melon. We’re now looking at sustainably run, eco-minded tours in Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and/or Botswana that will allow us to go on land and river safaris, see Victoria Falls, visit animal rescue reserves and/or lend our labor to something useful for others.
I may yet pick up some clay, paint and tools and devise some new art in my studio. But this blog is my ongoing creation, and it’s a pleasure to share my love of travel with you.
Thank you for continuing to share your own love with me — and each other.
Melanie (& Adam, too)
