Before entering the Hana Lava Tube, we were told that there are tiny little centipedes and beetles, as well as inch-long cockroaches...all of which are a sheer white. One the one hand, hooray, you have a better chance of seeing them in the dark, but that's the exact same reason the whole idea just creeps me out. We were only "lucky" enough to see a bright green, 20-inch worm with a semicircular hammerhead; this little beauty can hang from cave ceilings by its sticky tail.

Selling you all on the lava tube, huh? :)

I still can't get over the quality of these pictures taken using a phone camera! Now, which little creatures were those in the lava tubes? :)

I love your pics! They bring back memories!

I'd almost forgotten about those microscopic creatures "not found anywhere else on earth" until you mentioned them here! Did you get to see them? We were lucky to go in the Hana Lava Tube back when Chuck Thorne still gave guided tours... he brought along these mini-microscopes that we used to see those little creatures - it was very cool... kind of creepy to think those little guys were in there, but cool! :)

Gorgeous photos, even from the iPhone (is there anything it can't do?) You took me back to our trip to Maui and the ascent to the Haleakala crater. The views were stunning!

PS I had the same Lens Error with my Canon IXUS and it took them a month to fix it. Camera works fine now.

Ladies, thank you! Truly, the iPhone hooked me up where my husband failed me. :)

K, I clouded over like a silent storm for about 15 minutes. Not. Thrilled. But Adam, who (like Quent) is one of the most easygoing men on Earth, said we could always buy a disposable camera...and/or I could flog him publicly right there in the airport.

Seemed a good pair of choices. When my visions of violence passed, I reminded myself that 1) this was his birthday trip, and 2) traveling always comes with a little drama. It was oddly comforting to get it out of the way before we'd even left the ground!
